Raise the colors! Customized racing sails
When Design meets performance
Racing sails are not only technical elements optimized for navigation: they can also become true supports for visual expression. In the world of ocean racing and regattas, visual identity plays a key role, both for the crew and for the spectators. What if your boat had a unique sail, both aesthetic and meaningful?
An Inspiring Collaboration with SPIGAROU
We took part in this enriching collaboration, rising to the challenge of designing a custom-made motif for the mainsail of the SPIGAROU boat. The objective was to rework the design, harmoniously integrating the existing logo (below) to give a new graphic dimension to this racing yacht, which competes in the Bol d’Or on Lake Geneva, and to make its identity more visible. This project perfectly illustrates the synergy between the art of design and the world of sailing.

A Sail: A Majestic Medium of Expression
Beyond aesthetics, sail customization opens up many possibilities:
- Illustrating the name of the boat: A strong visual signature that reinforces the identity of the vessel.
- Highlighting a cause: Some teams choose to display committed messages or works of art on their sails.
- Optimizing the visibility of sponsors: A key element for partners who wish to associate their image with the performance and dynamism of water sports.
A strong visual and emotional impact
During major competitions, the impact of personalized sails is undeniable. Just look at the explosion of color at the start of the Vendée Globe, or the sumptuous sails of Sails of Change 8, winner of the Bol d’Or 2024 on Lake Geneva. These designs make an impression and contribute to the legend of the mythical races.
Customization & Performance: finding the right balance
While aesthetics play a major role, the impact on performance should not be neglected. The additional weight added by the various customization techniques can influence the behavior of the sail. For example:
- Scotchcal sticker: 100 g/m²
- Paint: 28 g/m²
- Sublimation printing: approximately 14 g/m²
By way of comparison, the fabric of a spinnaker is around 30 to 40 g/m². It is therefore essential to choose a technique suited to the type of sail and the sailing conditions, in order to maximize both visual impact and performance on the water.
